Self Help Book Review: Marie Kondo

FullSizeRender-9

Crazy cleaning and organising lady SWEEPS the nation with her tidying book. I reviewed it in my Podcast but I wanted to write the actual book review too.

Truth be told, my GOD. This book. I tried. I really did. Hell, I’m still trying.

Book review below.

DISCOVERY: Additionally to Helweek, this was THE most popular self help book this spring.

My friends Merel and Jamie loved it. My Internet friends loved it. I overheard people in the subway, in my yoga studio and at work discussing it. It was seemingly everywhere. So okay FINE. I’ll read it, I thought.

I bought it in my iBooks library for 9.99, but you can get the book on bol.com here* for 14,99 and on Book Depository for 11.49 here*

SUBJECT: The art of tidying. Organizing your stuff. Ordering your household. Basically everything I have no talent for nor interest in.

It is fascinating though. Marie Kondo takes it all to the extreme. Everything is a sentient being, everything needs to be thanked, YOUR SOCKS ARE ON VACATION WHEN YOU PUT THEM IN THE SOCK DRAWER AND YOU HAVE TO GREET A HOUSE WHEN YOU ENTER OR CLEAN IT.

Okay Lianne. Breathe.

Underneath the layers of words that make me go all white girl ‘I literally can’t even right now’, she does say a few things I like. Which are:

“By organising and creating your ideal living space, you create space for your ideal lifestyle”

and

“Keep only what you love” (Although if one more person asks me if something ‘sparks joy’ I might explode”

KOOKINESS (1-10): 10.

I think she’s insane. Onto something, but insane. In the podcast Andrew mentioned that he thinks she is being an extreme version of her message to get it across. So she might just sound insane in her book and be perfectly reasonable in real life. Who knows.

SHH STAMP OF APPROVAL: Surprisingly, yes but with caution. Yes, because I support the underlying philosophy “don’t clutter, only keep shit you like, use your living space to help you in life”, caution because I for one do not think it is very well written, plus I have read it with my eyebrows raised the entire time so now I look permanently surprised.

Another reason for the ‘yes’ is that I did reorganise my wardrobe using the Marie Kondo method and that created a closet with clothes I really love, and nothing else. So that was good.

(Still can’t throw a book away to save my life though, which is where my progress halted.)

FAVORITE QUOTES:

  • “This drastic change itself perception, the believe you can do anything if you set your mind to it, transforms behavior and lifestyles.”
  • “Although not large, the space I live in is graced only with those things that speak to my heart. My lifestyle brings me joy.”
  • “Keep only those things that speak to your heart. Then take the plunge and discard all the rest. By doing this, you can reset your life and embark on a new lifestyle.”
  • “The best sequence is this: Clothes first, then books, papers, miscellaneous items (kimono), and lastly sentimental items and keepsakes.”
  • “What you wear in the house does impact on your self-image.”
  • “Because you will only keep the things you truly love, your energy and joy will increase.”

YOU SHOULD READ THIS IF:

  • You want to read about your socks going on vacation in your sock drawer
  • You are super freaking excited about tidying
  • You want to transform your life by organising your stuff
  • You want to know more about her philosophy regarding materialism and your things.
  • You are somewhat into minimalism, but want to take on a more loving approach towards your possessions.

Will I ever complete the Marie Kondo method? Probably not. I will take some of the ideas with me, but I don’t think I’ll ever have a completed uncluttered house (or life). And that’s fine with me.

Ok bye!

WHAT THE ACTUAL F*CK.

  3. Mm, have not yet started reading but expected something like this from the previews. Personally for wardrobe planning I swear by Into Mind, check her site out. She uses beautiful visuals too.
