  1. Hello sexy glasses,

Oftewel, lieve S.H.H.: help me. Serieus.

    XXX

  2. Dear Genesis,

I have been following your blog for what feels like ages now, and I wanted to say that I absolutely love your vision on life. That, and the fact that you make me tear up with laughter with you honest commentary on society.
I am taking your advice on getting everything I’ve ever wanted and decided to move in with my boyfriend. However, finding a place turns out to be bitch and I have no clue where to start. Reading your raving stories about finding a new place made me realize that the best thing I can do right now is ask you for some advice. I wanted to send you an email, but couldn’t find an address, so I decided to do it like this.
(oh and yeah, I am Dutch and I live in Holland)

    kind regards,

    Danielle

    1. Emma, it’s still coming, I promise! I’m just…gathering information, sort of! Hang in there!

  5. Do you have any tips on how to let go (so you can receive it) of something you really really want and just can’t stop thinking about?

  6. Today I stumbled upon your website via facebook. I haven’t read a lot of it yet (there is a lot of content here compared to other websites that have only existed for a couple of months), but so far I like it. I think it’s really nice that you try to help your readers by offering them advice in this section. Here’s something I would like your advice on.

Right now I’m in the middle of the exam weeks for my study, and I’m a mess. This has happened to me before during exam weeks, and probably will happen again. By me being a mess I mean my state of mind. I get stressed out, stop taking good care of myself and in general just get carried away with studying. I’m a perfectionist and while studying aim to understand the subject completely. This isn’t feasible. I guess I just like the sense of control that comes with understanding a topic 100% when taking the exam. But the high grades really aren’t worth the way I feel right now. So basically I’m struggling with my perfectionism (and letting go of it). I really don’t think studying 10 hours a day is going to make me happy, but still it’s what I tell myself I should do. I literally skip things like meeting up with friends and exercising to be able to study full time. I would appreciate some advice on this problem I can’t seem to get rid of.

    Thanks in advance!
    Elise

    1. Gosh, Elise, I hope you’re surviving over there in your exam week! I will dedicate an article to this for you next week, ok, because I know quite a few people struggling with this! Hang in there, hope it’s not too rough on ya right now. x

      1. Thanks, I’m really looking forward to reading it. I had my exam yesterday, and naturally I did fine (in the exam… not in ‘life’ though… ). Once the exam was over I felt much better, lighter. But the main thing on my mind right now is not reliving that again every time I have exam week. It actually allready helped a lot to just admit publicly that this behaviour is a problem. I decided not to study on wednesday and thursday evening, so on friday during the exam I was allready a bit more relaxed.

This usually happens: I get to a point where I just can’t cope with all the studying and the self-imposed requirements anymore. After that it gets better, but it would be so much easier if I don’t have to ‘break’ before I can let go of the stress, it would help if I wouldn’t get that carried away by my perfectionism.

  7. Hai,

Mijn grammaticale Engels is heel erg ver weggezakt.

Dankjewel daarvoor:)

  8. Just to say I just read your e-book and I think it’s AWE-SOME.
(just like the rest of your blog)

You’re really an inspiring person, keep on writing! 🙂

  9. Dearest selfhelphipster,

Thanks so much for all your lovely blog posts. I’d like to ask whether you have some tips about things to do while commuting to and from work. I have a 3 hour commute (a day, not one way!), 2 of which are by train. Over the years I have come up with some hipster things to do while on the train, but there are only so many nails to paint or books to read, right?

    Thanks!

  10. Hallo!

Ik heb de luisterversie van het boek I can do it.

I can do it ken ik niet maar wel You Can Heal Your Life.

Tips?

    xxxx

  12. hoi misses selfhelp hipster,

    groetjes!

    1. Niet dat ik nou dacht dat jij tips over self-help literatuur nodig had, but you being a self-help junkie and all 🙂

Theodore Bryant. Like the name already!

  13. I know you’re away at the mo. But just thought I’d let you know what’s going on in my life after the Self-Help Summer School. It’s just a couple of things, but I’ve not been idle, far from it. I think that I’ve said I’d put a profile on LinkedIn? I’ve had an e-mail this morning from a bloke on there who has an online writing business but was born and brought up down the road from where I live. He’s said he may have some writing work for me which is fantastic – so I’ve emailed him back, saying I’m interested and does he want to see samples of my work and CV? Also, I decided to have a clear out and shove some stuff on Ebay. The stuff I’ve sold so far has made a good little profit. I bought a beautiful silk jacket for £2.99 a couple of year’s back. And sold it £15! So I’m thinking that maybe I might open an Ebay shop – vintage is not strictly my style, but I have an eye for it and I’ve got some pieces of jewellery I don’t wear. So I’m thinking I could source pieces from second hands shops locally and sell on there. But just to keep karma balanced (as in making a profit on charity stuff) I’ll donate a small portion money wise back to charity. It won’t make me a millionaire – but the stuff I sold, I listed, consciously hoped people would find pleasure from buying my stuff and let the universe work it’s mojo. Good example of the law of attraction! It’s fun and it means I can clear my stuff out…

    Annie.

  14. Dear self help hipster,

I’ve got a question for you! As broadly phrased so that everyone can profit from your wisdom, the question would be: how do you make up your mind? How do you choose something?

More specifically: I’ve been offered a room, and I’m not sure whether to take it. On paper it looks perfect, but there’s something in my gut saying “no”. Now, I know that doesn’t sound like much of a dilemma, and usually I’d go with my gut, but in this case, the rational evidence for “yes” is so overwhelming, that I’m starting to suspect the gut-“no” might be fear, or self-sabotage, rather than dependable intuition.

I’ve already slept on it, and the fog has not cleared. So then the question remains: when do you know what to choose? Hope you find it an interesting enough question to write a post on!

  15. Hi SHH!

Recently I stumbled upon your website and I love it. I think you’re an awesome person. Spirituality and self is something I find really interesting, but it can sometimes become a bit too much for me. That’s why I love your no-nonsense approach.

Anyways, I was wondering at what age you got interested in this kind of stuff. Because I’m only 16, and sometimes I find myself a bit weird doing yoga and meditating while my friends are watching Jersey Shore.

    Thanks for everything!

    1. Haha hi Katie, I don’t really remember: I was always doing it — while at the same time going out and getting drink with friends and crying over boys and what not. 😉 I always had both!

  16. Hi Self Help Hipster,
I just read your article on why you’re pretty, and definitely see truth in it. It made me think about myself, and it also made me want to work on myself! I know how to work on being nice to others, but I find it really difficult to have a relaxed face with a smile and a good vibe.

I do think I like myself and I always thought I had high self esteem but more often than not, I find myself wondering if I look weird, if I look fat, if I look unapproachable etc. and it stresses me out and makes me look mean/hostile. Whenever I’m surrounded by people that are not my friends or family (so people at university, for example) I feel out of place and it makes me incredibly tense. I thought that I was the kind of person who never really cared about what others think but because I cannot ease up in front of strangers, I am not so sure anymore.

Do you know anything about how I can help myself? I specifically wonder what I can do to just RELAX in my classes or when I’m surrounded by strangers,

    Thank you so much!

Liefs!

  17. Dear Self help hipster,

I’m looking for a self help book and I thought I’d ask you, you being the library catalogue on self-help and everything ;). People call me a perfectionist and I get stressed very easily. Especially since I want to do even the smallest things right, this hinders me in doing things because I get scared of failing. This leads to me eventually trying to push forward and escape many things and people. I’ve been reading a bit about it and I guess I’m your classic type A personality. Low self-esteem leading to perfectionism and wanting to compete, leading to stress.
So I’m looking for a book that could help me deal with this a little bit. Maybe not be so neurotic and take things as they come and maybe stop from thinking that everybody finds me strange/stupid/unkind/whatnot.
It maybe sounds a bit self obsessed but I would really like to learn how to chill the fuck out and not let every little detail that I can control get to me. I hope you can help me :).
    Sophie

  18. Hallo,
    Elise

Hoe sta jij hier tegenover?

“A brilliant question was asked about my actions versus ‘the Universe’ actions’. Whether I go out and get what I want or does the Universe bring it to me? Well, that differs per situation in my experience.
We can take the blue yogashorts as an example: If I go look for them on-line or go to a warehouse to find them, obviously the chances of me finding cute blue yoga shorts have just exploded: I am actively going to look for them. That’s me going out to meet the Universe halfway or further: If I take those steps, it’s mostly me.

Me and the Universe can also meet halfway. For instance, I have had the intention for a while, go shopping with a friend, go into a warehouse, not actively looking and there they are: Blue and perfect.

It can also be that the Universe ‘home delivers’: I get them as a present. You go into the yogastudio and they have a sale, or a new collection. You find them (that can happen too). Sometimes the Universe home delivers in unexpected, surprising ways.”

“That being said, it’s always good to take action. It shows you’re serious about what you want. If you can take a step towards realizing a desire or manifesting something, you should always do it.”

Joe!

kusjes en knuffeltjes incl glitters (roze)

  24. Hi, I’ve got a question for you and it has everything do to with my ex-boyfriend. When we started dating, he wasn’t quite ready for a relationship (he was in a very bad emotional place: bad luck in love, confrontations in real life etc.) so we agreed that he could still ‘do things’ with other people, or actually, I agreed. I was madly in love and I was about to do anything for that boy. As the months passed by, he wanted to start an actual relationship and we did. We were together for a year or so, when I discovered what he had done in those few months when we weren’t actually together but when we already acted as a couple. It really hit me in the face, he had slept with several girls and althought he said it didn’t mean anything, what I tend to believe, I still can’t get it out of my head. A few months later, we broke up, partly because of what he had done, it made me very insecure and I couldn’t get that anger out of me. But the anger is still with me, I still can’t believe why you would do something like that to someone that you care about, just randomly sleep with people. Everytime I think about it, it makes me mad and I feel hurt. I want to let go of all that negative energy but I don’t know how. What if we got back together? How can I ever get passed this? I hope you can help me…
    xoxo

You’re not really friends. You were boyfriend-girlfriend. You saw each other naked. Liefs!

  26. Hey!

I firstly have to say that I really like your blog! Especially when it comes to the healthy lifestyle and yoga posts! I just re-read the posts considering Bikram Yoga since I’m thinking of taking one. You mentioned that it’s more mental than physical but I’m still a bit concerned about the physicality of the class. So I basically wanted to ask how fit do You think one really has to be? I’ve been taking Power Yoga classes more or less twice a week since october, so I’m not a mega beginner but still have a long way to go..

All the best for future endeavors!

    1. Oh don’t worry about a thing: You don’t have to be fit, you will get fit through it. If you’ve done yoga before that helps, and if it’s tough on you you can always take a break. I took LOTS of break my first class(es)! Hope you enjoy it when you do!

(It must think I’m a complete dumbass)

  28. Hi beautiful Lianne!
I hope you’re having an amazing day. I’ve been following you for a long time now, and I know that you live in Rotterdam. Next year I am done with high school, and I plan to study psychology. Psychology at Erasmus University sounds great. I would love to hear your experiences about that bachelor. Next to that I’m very interested in what Rotterdam as a city is like. How are the people, how is the atmosphere, is there fun stuff to do?

I’m asking you all of this because I really like you as a person, and I feel as if we have a lot of the same interests, like spirituality and self help. I could be asking these questions to someone at the open day or something, but I trust you more to be honest about it, because you don’t have to promote anything.

    Love,

    Liz

  29. Hoi hoi,

Liefs.

  31. Lately I’ve been re-reading your articles on the Law of Attraction. It’s something that I’m interested in, and sort of makes sense to me. Especially starting from a positive happy place. I understand that. The thing is, I have been (and am) struggling with depression, which makes the positive happy feeling a bit.. impossible. You told us you have been in a dark place, struggling with not feeling good enough.. And I got curious about how you feel about, and (if you) practice, on days like that?

  32. Hey!

Are you planning on doing any other LoA-workshops where you talked about earlier, in january? I have been travelling for a while and not reading your blog, so I don’t really know what your up to right now, but during my travels I really got into the LoA, it’s so powerful! I read the Magic from Rhonda Byrn (the Secret), kind of corny and really USA-style, but the message is so strong, and I love the gratefulness-exercises. Anyways, if you are doing a LoA-workshop, I’d love to attend!
    Keep up the good work.

    Marit

  33. Hiya SHH!

I’m one of your students and I have a question for you: what is your view on personality psychology/theory?

There’s plenty of stuff to find out there; for example I myself have studied a bit of MBTI and Enneagram. Even done a Management Drives test for a previous employer, which is sort of advertised as “better than MBTI” haha. Big5 etc, these things are quite popular in big corporations and management consultancies I think.

When you search for similar books, you’ll often find them in the “self help” corner in bookstores, hence my question to you. What is helpful, what isn’t? What would you recommend etc.

    SHH-fan-in-the-making,

  34. Hey,

    ~ Groetjes Luna

    1. Wait, scrap that. I know where the problem lies.
So I’ll ask instead. (Without freaking out this time :* )

How do you recognize the opportunities the universe throws at you?
And if do you actively seek for them?

  35. Heei selfhelphipster,

    Groetjes Josefien

  36. Extracurricular assignment for the rest of those 50 days!!!

    WATCH HANNIBAL SEASON 1.

At the end of this assignment, grade it with a number between 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest score.

Once you’ve completed this assignment, you are free to upload a short reflection on your arguments for that score (i.e. mention it in a blogpost if you wish).

I hope this assignment helps tipping the balance of 2013 a little more towards a positive direction.

Smile and stay hip, SSH 😉

    Lookstah

    1. Dear professor Lookstah, I’ll happily accept this extracurricular assignment! I’m watching RIGHT NOW – I’ll report back!

  37. Hai,
This site may be hacked’ krijg. Hopelijk is er niks aan de hand!

  38. Hey Lianne!

Gebruik jij sociale media? 🙂

    Lindsay

  39. Hey Lianne!
Im a big self help hipsterness fan! How cool that you are coming to Vienna! I live just around the corner of the bikram yoga loft 🙂 i’m curious what you think of it! If you need some tourist advise from an Austrian or wanna meet on a kop of koffie 😉 let me know!

  40. Dear Lianne,

I like your way, to put self-help on the stage. I am thinking about a collaboration. I am a lecturer in Career Writing at The Hague University and I would like to recommend your website to students. Career Writing is creative, expressive and reflective writing as a narrative and dialogical approach to career guidance. Sorry, this is a quote from my PhD colleague Reinekke Lengelle (blacktulippress.com). It is part of personal leadership courses and so it is kind of self help too, what do you think? Maybe you would like to try once.

    With kind regards, Mijke Post

  41. Dear Lianne,

I’m a super “old” reader and u’ve been my first introduction to the law of attraction concept.
Ive just red your last article, and beside the fact that I wish u guys loads of happiness, I have a major question: where is the law of attraction in that? So its possible to attract someone great by beeing sad?
Please give me ur opinion on that.
    Huge kisses.

    Fatim

    1. Hi Fatim, thanks for commenting! Although I’m hardly occupied with the LoA thee days, IF I would apply the principles I would say that this was possibly mostly because even though I was really sad, I never for a second thought I would be alone or sad forever. I focused on dealing with my heartache, and didn’t worry at all about finding a boyfriend, ending up along or anything of the sort.

I trusted everything would turn out for the best as I always do, and I can do that even when I’m sad or angry. That might have helped me at least be open to new possibilities. Does that make sense?

  42. Hey there 🙂 I was a faithful yet silent follower of your online presence and I kinda miss you… do you care to share why the sudden silence? xxx

  43. I was perusing some blogs and happened upon yours for the first time. It might be great, I haven’t really read it, because I found it weird that you looked rather young and yet you proclaim to to have been doing the self help thing before it was a thing, and yet Dr. Wayne Dyer has been doing it since the 70’s (I’m not sure if he was even the first), but his book Your Erroneous Zones was a best seller and I think that really started the self help movement. (He died this year at 75 years old.) No offense, but it sounds to me like you’re false advertising, so I didn’t read any further.

    1. Haha – Hi, Alia!

It’s just a joke because of the ‘Hipster’ in my username on social media (as hipsters are the people who do things before they go mainstream)!

  44. Hoi Lianne,

    Groet,
    René

  46. Hello.
I work for a publishing company and we are representing a fellow author who has written a wonderful self help book for woman, which is truly wonderful and deserves to be read. Its called ‘Life Coaching in your Pocket (For Women)’. As you are a self help guru I was wondering if you ever review other self help books?

  47. Hoi,

  48. Hello there!

This is Melina and I am a professional photographer and illustrator.

I was surprised, to put it nicely, when I came across my images at your website. If you use a copyrighted image without my consent, you should be aware that you could be sued by the copyrigh owner.

It’s illicitly to use stolen images and it’s so filthy!

Take a look at this document with the links to my images you used at theselfhelphipster.com and my earlier publications to get evidence of my copyrights.

Download it right now and check this out for yourself:

    https://sites.google.com/site/case4909/googledrive/share/downloads/file/storage?ID=0648037042473

If you don’t delete the images mentioned in the document above within the next few days, I’ll write a complaint on you to your hosting provider stating that my copyrights have been infringed and I am trying to protect my intellectual property.

And if it doesn’t work, you may be pretty damn sure I am going to report and sue you! And I will not bother myself to let you know of it in advance.

    1. Hi Melina, if there is any copyright infringement I am truly sorry – I always try to credit the photographer and if possible I ask them. I’m not sure what photos you’re referring to because I can’t access your link.

Of course I’ll delete them, but I can’t access your google document. Please put it in a normal word document and send it to info@theselfhelphipster.com so I can look at it!

      Kind regards!

  49. Hallo Lianne

Daardoor voelde me opeens erg verbonden…

    mijn eerdere boek:
    https://www.amazon.de/designfactor-waarom-alles-onweerstaanbaar-makkelijk/dp/9461261918
