Blogging without Blaghing: My 4 Rules.

NOT throwing shade at the How To Blog series. Yes, totally thought about it. Throwing ALL the shade. But the bloggers who write it know what they’re doing, and apparently there is a demand for it. So okay. Fine.

But man, do people put the ‘blagh’ in blahging, right guys?

So fucking busy trying to make themselves happen instead of making something out of themselves.

Sharing their own shitty articles 4 times a day, trying to establish contact with anyone who might be useful to them, borderlining on stalking. Writing dime-a-dozen articles and expecting fame and fortune. Obsessing over visitor stats and followers. Click-bait links, obnoxious attempts for engagement.

I guess some social media experts somewhere are convinced you’re doing it right. I personally want to get an extra glass of water just thinking about it. The thirst is so real.

Sure, do whatever you want. I mean, I’m not taking away anyone’s right to be a shithead online.

But did you know? You CAN have a blog without resorting to cheap ploys, self promotional bullshit and treating readers like they’re imbeciles? Amazing.

Read my 4 Golden Blog Rules below.

Please note: This is how I do it. This works for me and my website. I am not trying to make you do it like me.

I am just offering a different perspective, sharing a different way of blogging to counterweigh the continuous message that a blog has to be a company/money maker or that you have to self promote yourself until you’re blue in the face.

1) I DO WHATEVER I FUCKING PLEASE. I write about whatever I want. Whenever I want. If I don’t want to write, I don’t write. If I want to write for 50 days in a row, I write for 50 day in a row. And if I want to write a 50 Shades Of Grey drinking game or a movie review about Warm Bodies somewhere in between all the inspirational crap, I will damn well do it. Because I want to. Because I think it’s fun.

And because this is my website. I could write a 2-page essay on the migration of army ants and you would just have to deal with it.

You are not my clients. You are people who of your own volition decided to read my blog. You’re very welcome to offer topic suggestions, constructive criticism and you can even tell me how much you dislike me, BUT. In the end, I decide and do as I please.

2) I BELIEVE IN MY AUDIENCE. Beyond the obvious ‘I love my readers’, I believe my audience will find my blog. Whether it’s through Google, through friends or by accident, the people who might like my blog will come across it. Without me screaming “HEY I EXIST” in every corner of the Internet.

Moreover, I believe my readers to be intelligent, self sufficient people. I believe that they are fully capable to think for themselves. You’d be amazed how much easier it becomes to write for people who you believe to be smart and able to make their own decisions.

With the assumption of an intelligent audience that will find me if they need me, I don’t have to continuously harass people to read or buy my whatever. They’ll do it if they want/need to. If not, okay. I don’t think it’s necessary for me to convince them.

(Out of love I would probably not expose you guys to my Army Ant essay either.)

3) I BELIEVE IN QUALITY CONTENT I believe good content promotes itself.

If YOU believe my article is good enough to share, THAT’s when you should share it. I don’t have to run around asking for RTs or shares. If the article is worth it and resonates with you, you may make the choice to share it. If not, that’s okay too.

Plus, I pretty much only care about the writing aspect of blogging.

I write everything myself and work on my writing skills continuously. My blog exists so that I get to write. The rest is just semi-necessary stuff I have to do in between.

4) ANYTHING BUT ORGANIC GROWTH IS CHEATING Cheap tricks like buying followers and all that shit won’t last. If people spent half as much time trying to write well as they do making themselves happen we might actually have some good blogs in the near future.

Because here’s the fucking thing, genius: If you’re good enough, it will happen.

And if you’re not good enough, it will not happen UNLESS you have a large amount of patience and motivation to keep practicing.

Anyone is totally entitled to their own method of blogging. They might think that how they do it is the way to go.

But by buying into this culture and acting on it you are not creating a blog world of value, just a bunch of people who aren’t really good at what they’re doing trying to convince each other they are. Which is a shame.

Instead we could be doing awesome shit and sharing cute puppy videos with each other.

  1. I so prefer your way. I took a big step back from the thirst a while ago because it’s such an exhausting game, trying to “happen.” Bitch-slap embraced!

    1. I TOTALLY understand people can get caught up in it, but not to the extent that I sometimes witness it. I swear to God, the moment you stop trying to happen and focus on doing you, you’re not only instantly happy, everything will flow WAY more naturally!

  2. you go girl! stay true and keep your voice, it may be through blogging for now but I believe one day your face will be all over my local bookstore too!

  4. Haha, I agree, I like blogs that not come over as forced. I rather read a blog that updates ones a month about interesting and meaningful things than read those that update a hundred times but with posts that I won’t read half of. (Though I do sometimes, as example Lauren Conrad, it can be so superficial, but I love looking at the pretty pictures )

To be honest, I have a blog too. I suck at it, but I don’t care.
I only made it because I felt like it and I forget I have it half of the time.
It’s just for fun, not even for ‘readers’.

I really like you and your blog for that. You don’t only write, cause you love it,
but I think you enjoy helping people too. Thanks a million for that

    1. If you have fun doing it, that’s what matters.

And I do love helping people, and it’s sweet of you to notice. Thanks, Luna – Kisses!

  6. I totally agree with this. Of course I would love to have a lot of followers, but only if they really like me and my blog. There´s no fun in blogging if you´re doing it the ´blagh´-way.

  9. Thnx 4 this! 🙂 I just started a small blog, read some “How To” articles and got quite stressed out and “I can’t do this”-ish about it. But I started anyway and decided to just see if I can trust the process. And now here I am reading your post and it makes me very happy and relaxed, so thanx again. xoxo Lotte

    1. Good girl! Something that’s (at least for me) related to doing whatever you please is writing whatever you think is fun and cool and something you enjoy. It’s about you, and you can do it however you want! xx

  10. Refreshing! First thing that came in mind. Lovely. Honest. Trustworthy. I like this. I like your remarks and ofcourse, it is true. But sometimes it’s difficult to also behave in that way. Be sure, this inspires me a lot. Thank you!

  11. Haha, Amen to that!

  12. THANK YOU! I’m a new reader and so glad I found this. I started my blog not that long ago, but have already stepped back from it because I felt like it wasn’t good enough, I wasn’t posting the right things, and nobody would care. I couldn’t decide on the “right topics” and it frustrated me. When you look at every other blog talking about fashion and beauty and shit you don’t really care about, it’s hard not to compare yourself and feel like what you choose to talk about isn’t going to matter. This post reminds me I’m not blogging just to get readers and see how much I can sell them, but because I was looking for another creative outlet.

    1. That’s the thing: DON’T COMPARE! Do you! Be creative and be happy with what you do! xx

  13. GUUURL you are on fire! No but really, you’re so right. If you like it, do it. And if it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. Simple as fuck 🙂

Quality over quantity and content is king.

  16. Exactly what I think. I really hate it when blog update that much, especially if it’s all just personal stuff, like a lot of pictures and soon-to-be-boring shopping sprees or holiday stories. I dislike a lot of other ‘articles’ too, but maybe that’s just me being too strict.

I’ve noticed this thing on Bloglovin too. Personally, I appreciated the anonymous version of Bloglovin better. It’s sad to see certain bloggers like a HUGE amount of articles, so their little photographs, linked to their blogs, will be promoted over this one big blog.
I’d rather have one anynomous like than ten little faces below my article.
Anyway… Good to see these ideas resonate with so many people!

    1. oh, what I really wanted to say… since they annoy me, I try to stay far from these blogs.
Moreover, I am convinced that by not reading these blogs, we can discourage them (the blogs, not the people) from emerging/growing. But maybe that’s just me (again), being a bit naive..

    2. Really? I LOVE the personal blogs that most people write! People and what they do are fascinating!

      1. Hmm… I see I didn’t write that down clearly. What I meant is, I like a personal STORY (caps since I cannot underscore) as much as the next person. However, I dislike blog posts that just feature everything the blogger does, day after day, from buying new stuff at Action/Expensive Warehouses to eating potato chips late at night while applying nail polish. It can be fun to watch every now and then. But I love some content, a subject, be it a blog dedicated to travel, nature, writing or self help. Quality over quantity. (Note: it’s the content that’s most important… that’s why I’m still reading here! ^^)
Don’t get me wrong, I like personal stories. Because you’re right: people (& what they do & why & where they’re heading & what their pasts and dreams are like…) are fascinating! A lot more than their nail polish 😉

  17. thanks for sharing, I like this fresh breeze.

What I don’t agree with is the thing about being good- there’s a believe in our society that everything you have is deserved (which means that you don’t deserve the things you don’t have) and if you’re good things will follow (often without tons of effort)- but that’s not always the case. Many talented people don’t get as much attention as the ones that preach nice words and mainstream content.

    Do people actually buy followers?

    1. Thank for your 2 cents Fenne!

I didn’t say that that everything people have is always reserved, nor that if you’re good you’ll automatically get good things. And I definitely didn’t say anything about it not requiring tons of effort!

What you say might be true, but what I said was that if you make something that resonates with people, you will get a response. The better you do it, the bigger the response will be.

If you do something that only resonates with a small group of people, that can be because your field/niche is very specific, not because you’re not talented.

(And yes, apparently they do, especially on Instagram!)

  18. Goed verhaal, Lianne.

  19. Thanks for sharing! I recently caught myself thinking about writing a post about food, but then I thought ‘this might not fit in my blogging style’. Well – after reading this, I’m totes gonna write about it 🙂 I kinda agree with the comments that a lot of (Dutch) (girl) blogs are really starting to look like each other. It seems that companies and PR agencies are inviting the same people to try their new coconut water/running shoes/lipsticks…

Btw I love your writing (I live in a anglophone country), find it very inspiring. I even started to do some serious yoga (after fumbling around for years) thanks to you!

  20. Goeie artikel!

  22. This is one of the reasons why I love your blog: quality writing, honesty, good ideas, sometimes completely random, a bit unexpectable (will she have a new post tomorrow, in a week or in a month), relatable, real and no bullshit attached.

  23. Dankjewel!

  24. I totally agree with your post. I do believe you should follow your own gut when it comes to blogging. Following rules that others present to you, will only make you stray further away from what made you start with blogging in the first place. And why would you keep on blogging if it doesn’t make you feel good, or if you aren’t proud of the things you write.

Of course, that’s only for the people who blog for fun or out of love for writing. When you want to be a business(wo)man with an professional blog, then those rules do work. It just not my taste, and I dislike blogs who’ve become too commercial. Somehow that just doesn’t seem genuine toe me.
